The "Love Ladder" story in Chongqing's Simian Mountain, also known as "Ladder of Love" or "Steps to Heaven," tells the tale of a couple, Liu Guojiang and Xu Chaoqing, who eloped in the 1950s to escape societal judgment due to their age difference. To ensure Xu's safety while living on the steep mountainside, Liu carved over 6,000 stone steps, a project that took him 50 years. This act of love and devotion has made their story a symbol of enduring romance and is a popular tourist attraction.
Here's a more detailed look at the story: The Elopement: Liu Guojiang, a younger man, fell in love with Xu Chaoqing, a widow ten years his senior. In the 1950s, their relationship was considered scandalous by their village, leading them to elope and build a secluded life on Simian Mountain.
The Ladder: To make it easier and safer for Xu, who was not used to the steep terrain, Liu spent half a century carving steps into the mountainside. He used a steel chisel and hammer, painstakingly creating over 6,000 steps.
